Beach Classification

Italian beaches are classified by type. Spiaggia libera (free, public) is what you want if you don't want to pay for a beach. Stabilimento balneare / spiaggia attrezzata is the "lido" with umbrella and chair rental. Some beaches are private (privata). This tool tells you what you're looking at.

What this solves

You're at a beautiful Italian beach. There are rows of umbrella-and-chair setups for €30-50/day, but you also see a strip of free beach nearby. Which to choose? The lido has amenities (showers, bar, restaurant); the spiaggia libera is just sand and sea. This tool explains the trade-offs and where to find free beach in popular areas.

Beach types

Spiaggia libera — Free public beach. Bring your own umbrella, chair, towel. No amenities. Usually the narrowest strip (often 5-10m wide) between the lidos.
Stabilimento balneare / spiaggia attrezzata — Lido. Umbrella + 2 chairs + sunbed rental. €15-50/day per umbrella. Showers, bar, sometimes restaurant. Booking recommended in summer.
Spiaggia privata — Private beach (often hotel-owned). Restricted access. Some are public-with-restrictions. Usually most expensive.
Spiaggia nudisti — Nudist beach. Italy has many (mostly Tuscany and Adriatic). Look for signs or ask locals.
Spiaggia attrezzata per cani — Dog-friendly beach. Some regions have dedicated sections.

How to find free beach (spiaggia libera)

  1. Walk past the lidos. Free beach is usually right after the last one or right before the first one.
  2. Look for signs "spiaggia libera" or "libero."
  3. Ask locals or search online "[city name] spiaggia libera."
  4. Avoid the strip directly in front of paid lidos — they will charge you for being "on" their row.

How to read the result

  1. The recommended is the beach type that matches your priority.
  2. The cost is realistic for the coast and season.
  3. The how to find tells you where to look.

Limitations

  • "Free beach" is shrinking. Italian law guarantees public access, but concessions reduce it.
  • Some beaches are partly private, partly public. Check signs.
  • Lido pricing in August can be 2-3x the listed range.
  • Some lidos have minimum stays or charge per person, not per umbrella.

FAQ

Is it illegal to take free beach that has been concessioned?

No. Italian law guarantees public access. Lidos have concessions but cannot block free beach adjacent to them. If a lido tries to charge for "their" sand, they are violating Italian law.

Should I book lido in advance?

In August, yes. In shoulder season (May, Sept), no — walk-up usually works. Some lidos have online booking; the popular ones fill up by 10am in July-Aug.
