What this solves
You had a €40 meal in Rome. The waiter brought you everything, was friendly, helpful. Should you leave a 15% tip like in the US? No — that confuses the waiter and overpays for already-included service. Italian restaurants have coperto; tipping on top is unusual. This tool tells you the right amount for each situation.

How to read the result
- The tip amount is what to leave for the specified service quality.
- The how to leave tells you cash vs card and where to put it.
- The expected tells you whether the recipient expects it.
Limitations
- Service workers in Italy earn a regular wage; tips are bonus, not income. Don't feel obligated.
- Some restaurants now add "servizio" 10% to the bill. If present, no additional tip expected.
- "Coperto" (cover charge) and "servizio" (service charge) are NOT tips — they go to the restaurant, not the staff.
- American-style 18-20% is unusual and can confuse staff.
FAQ
How do Italians actually leave tips?
Most Italians leave nothing at restaurants because coperto covers service. They round up taxis (€1-2 above fare). They tip generously only for excellent personal service (private tour, special meal, exceptional hotel staff).
Is it OK to leave a tip on the credit card?
Some restaurants allow card tip, but many Italian waiters prefer cash because card tips go through the restaurant's accounting. Cash tip is more directly received.
