What this solves
Most first-time drivers in Italy underestimate toll costs. A Milan-Venice trip is €24 in tolls plus fuel. Rome-Florence is €16 plus fuel. Naples-Sorrento has no autostrada (SS145 Amalfitana only). Some toll stations are unmanned at night and require a card; not having one triggers a "missed toll" €100+ fee plus admin. This tool tells you the route, toll, payment method, and what to do if you miss a booth.

How to read the result
- The total toll is what you'd pay if you take the toll road. Italy has free alternatives (SS = state road) which are usually slower but scenic.
- The Telepass option requires a monthly subscription (~€1.50/month + €25 deposit) — only worth it for trips >2 weeks.
- The card at casello is the simplest for short trips. Most booths have unattended card terminals.
- The cash option is widely available but you'll need exact change at some smaller booths.
Limitations
- Sicily's A19 was made free for residents; tourists still pay (€2-3 each way). Verify before assuming free.
- "Free road" alternatives (SS145 Amalfitana, SS163 Amalfi coast) can take 3-4x longer.
- Fuel costs not included. Italian highway fuel consumption is similar to other countries (~7L/100km for a small car).
- Tolls change with inflation; figures are 2024-2026.
- Some routes have "closed" toll booths at night (no operator). Card or Telepass only.
FAQ
What if I miss the toll booth?
If you drive through without paying, your license plate is photographed. You get a "missed toll" notice by mail ~2-3 weeks later with a €100+ fine plus the original toll. Add a €30-50 admin fee if the rental company processes it. To fix it: stop at the next "Punto Blu" office or service area; explain and pay the missed toll plus a small fee.
Is there a vignette like Switzerland?
No. Italy uses per-trip tolls at caselli. The only country with the vignette system in this region is Switzerland.
