Airport Transfer Comparison

Italian airports have multiple transfer options: dedicated trains (Leonardo Express), regional trains, airport buses (Terravision, Flixbus), official taxis, and rideshare. Each has a different price, time, and risk. This tool compares them.

What this solves

You land at Fiumicino at 11pm. You have 25kg luggage. Three "taxi" drivers are waving at you inside the terminal. The official Leonardo Express train to Termini stopped running at 11:30pm. This tool tells you what runs at your arrival time, what each costs, and how to avoid the €100+ overcharge from unofficial drivers.

How to read the result

  1. The cheapest is usually the airport bus. €5-10 per person.
  2. The fastest to city center is usually the dedicated train (where it exists) or taxi.
  3. The most reliable at late hours is the official taxi with fixed fare. Verify the rate on the airport's taxi info board.
  4. Avoid: anyone offering rides inside the terminal before you exit. They charge 2-3x the official rate. Always exit, then take official taxi at the stand.

Limitations

  • Late-night options are limited. Some trains/buses stop at 22:00-23:30.
  • "Official taxi" rates are fixed in some cities (Rome, Milan) but metered in others (Florence, Naples).
  • Uber and Free Now (was MyTaxi) are available but limited. Italian taxi unions restrict them.
  • Some airport hotels offer free shuttles — check before booking.

FAQ

Why are unofficial airport taxi drivers a problem?

They charge €80-120 for what should be €30-50. They often don't have meters and quote inflated "tourist rates." Always exit the terminal and use the official taxi stand, where the rate is fixed or metered legally.

Can I take a regular Trenitalia train from FCO?

Yes — Leonardo Express is the dedicated FCO-Termini train (€14, 32 min). There's also a regional FL1 train that stops at multiple Rome stations (€8). Either works; Leonardo Express is faster and more comfortable.
