Train Strike Survival

Italian train strikes happen several times a year. By law they're announced 24 hours in advance, and a guaranteed minimum service runs. The trick is knowing the safe windows and having a backup plan.

What this solves

You're booked on a Frecciarossa to Florence on Friday. Thursday evening you hear about a strike. Your high-speed train is probably cancelled; regionale might run. This tool shows the monthly strike-risk pattern, the guaranteed-service windows, and the backup options.

Plan your trip

Strike-risk by month (typical)

MonthStrike likelihoodNotes
JanuaryHighPost-holiday disputes; budget announcements
FebruaryMediumCarnevale season; pickets less likely
MarchMediumSpring disputes start
AprilLowEaster tourism = political cost too high
MayMediumLabor day May 1 is guaranteed strikes
JuneLowTourism peak begins
JulyLowBeach season, low political appetite
AugustVery lowAlmost everyone on vacation
SeptemberMediumBack-to-work disputes, contract renewals

NovemberHighBudget votes, more disputes
DecemberVery lowChristmas truce; only extreme disputes

Frequency is typical, not guaranteed. Actual strikes are announced 24h in advance on trenitalia.com and the Ministry of Transport website.

How to read the result

  1. Guaranteed service windows are when trains run even during a strike. By Italian law, Trenitalia runs a minimum service during rush hours.
  2. Frecciarossa/Italo are usually fully cancelled on strike days — high-speed isn't "essential."
  3. Intercity may run with reduced frequency. Verify on the "garantito" list.
  4. Regionale has the highest chance of running, especially in the protected windows.

Limitations

  • "Typical" strike frequency is an average. Some years have 5+ major strikes; others 1-2.
  • May 1 (Labor Day) has a guaranteed national strike every year — plan around it.
  • Strike notices are posted ~24 hours in advance, sometimes less. Check the morning of travel.
  • Refund rules: cancelled trains get full refunds (automatic for online bookings). Strikes don't refund hotel, restaurant, or other bookings.

FAQ

What's my backup if my train is cancelled?

Three options: (1) Regionale on the same route, slower but likely to run; (2) Flixbus / Itabus for intercity routes; (3) Rental car (one-way rental from €60-100 between major cities). Trenitalia will refund cancelled tickets automatically.

Where do I find the "garantito" train list?

On Trenitalia.com the day before — they publish the protected service list. You can also check the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (mit.gov.it) and the local FS news.
