Train Type Chooser

Italian trains come in 6 categories with very different speed, price, and rules. Pick the wrong one and you'll either pay 3x as much or stand for 2 hours. This tool matches your trip to the right train.

What this solves

You're traveling from Rome to Florence. The Frecciarossa takes 1h30m at €45-90. The Regionale takes 3h15m at €15-20. Same route, very different experience. But the Regionale is the only one that runs during certain strikes, requires no reservation, and is hop-on-hop-off at intermediate stops. This tool picks the right train for your situation.

How to read the result

  1. The recommended train matches your priority.
  2. The price depends heavily on advance booking. Day-of Frecciarossa can be €90; month-ahead €35-45.
  3. The strike risk matters if you're traveling on a strike day. Regionale sometimes runs when Frecciarossa is cancelled.
  4. The reservation requirement means you can't just buy a ticket at the station and board; you need a seat number.

Limitations

  • Prices are 2024-2026 figures. They change with demand and competition between Trenitalia and Italo.
  • Strike rules: by Italian law, a guaranteed minimum service runs even during strikes. The Trenitalia website shows "garantito" trains 24 hours before.
  • Regionale tickets must be validated (stamp in the yellow machine) before boarding — a €50+ fine if you forget.
  • High-speed trains between major cities are also operated by Italo (private competitor). Same routes, different prices.

FAQ

Why are Frecciarossa tickets sometimes cheap?

Advance booking + low-demand trains = €19-25. Trenitalia and Italo both undercut each other. The catch: those tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable, and you're locked to a specific train at a specific time.

Should I buy tickets in advance?

For Frecciarossa/Italo: yes, 2-4 weeks ahead for best prices. For Regionale: no — same price always.
